Moving Timeline and Checklist

Preparing for a move can be overwhelming. It might seem like there is just too much to do, and you’ll never be ready! Break it down into small, manageable tasks, and it will be much easier. Use this timeline to help keep you on track.

Two to Three Months Before Moving Day

Research moving companies, get estimates from at least three companies, and reserve your mover.

Eight Weeks Before Moving Day

Coordinate the moving date with your moving company. If you are moving yourself, reserve your moving vehicle or container.

Start taking inventory of your house so you can decide what you will move with you, and what you will sell, donate, or throw away.

Contact the Chamber of Commerce or Tourism Board in your new city, and request information. Involve older kids by letting them research your new hometown.

Seven Weeks Before Moving Day

Obtain copies of your family’s medical and dental records. Ask your healthcare professionals for referrals to providers near your new home.

Have your children’s school records transferred to their new school.

Make arrangements for moving your pet.

Six Weeks Before Moving Day

Make your travel arrangements: Map out your travel route if you are driving to your new home.
Book airline tickets if you will be flying. Make hotel reservations.

Gather your motor vehicle registration documents and other important documents such as stocks and deeds.

Purchase your packing supplies: cartons, packing tape, packing paper, bubble wrap, etc.

Sort through your closets and get rid of items you won’t be moving with you. Put aside items that you want to sell. Donate the rest.
